ELECTRONIC RESOURCES
Electronic books
Electronic books are parallel publications to paper publications or independent, only published in the Internet. Electronic books can be read on screen or it is possible to make searches from the text in which case it is easy to find quickly the subject one is looking for.
There are either separate electronic books (for example dictionaries and encyclopedias) or they belong to larger packages (for example Ebrary). At the moment, Turku University Library has access to about 310.000 electronic books.
Electronic books on Nelli portal
Electronic books operate in different ways depending on the technique applied by the publisher or host. Some of the books can be read on screen without any separate utility programs. Some are in PDF form in which case the Adobe Reader program is needed. Ebrary and Ellibs services differ from others by function, see further instructions for these.
Electronic course books
There is also some course book material in the library’s electronic book packages. Electronic course books can be searched for at least from Ellibs and Ebrary electronic book services.
Ellibs and Ebrary books on Nelli portal
Ebrary’s electronic book service
Ebrary’s books function only with the Ebrary’s own Ebrary Reader reading program. You can download the program to your own computer from Ebrary’s front page. Downloading to work stations in the University of Turku network (e.g. work stations in micro classes) does not necessarily work. In this case, the reading program should be downloaded from the university network as follows:
- press the Start button at the left lower corner of the screen and choose Control Panel
- from Control Panel choose Add or Remove Programs and from there Add New Programs
- choose Ebrary Reader for Mozilla and Firefox and press Add
Downloaded like this Ebrary functions with Firefox browser. From the computer at home, when it is possible to download the reading program from Ebrary’s front page, it in principle does not matter which browser you use. In problem situations, Internet Explorer may be the best option.
Ellibs’s electronic book service
Books offered by Ellibs can be downloaded to a single work station and there it is possible to read the file during the loan period (usually either 1 or 7 days). As the book has thus been "borrowed" it is not possible to read it during that time at any other work station. Ellibs books require at least Adobe Reader 6.
When you log in Ellibs your user id is your own library card number in the Volter database. Your password is your changed personal PIN code used in Volter (the default PIN code does not work in Ellibs!).
