BOOKS

There are approximately 2.000.000 books in the Main Library and discipline-specific libraries.

There are three main book collections at the Main Library. The Fennica collection includes nearly all material published in Finland. The foreign collection, Genera, includes international literature acquired as purchases, donations and exchanges until 2007. Acquisitions to the foreign collection since 2007 can be found in the open-shelf collection on the second floor of the Main library. The open-shelf collection includes also some Finnish literature.

Books belonging to the Fennica and Genera collections are in closed stacks and it is possible to use them by making a call slip request.

The reference collection situated in the Main Library's reading room is also available for the customers.

Discipline-specific libraries concentrate on the materials of their own fields. Some of the books can be borrowed home and some can only be used in the library premises. More information under the headings Library Collections and Loan periods.

Availability of the books can be checked via the Volter database. Information on books not added to the database, but available in the library, can be found in the card files which are situated on the second floor of the Main Library and in discipline-specific libraries.

The number of electronic books in the library resources increases continuously. They can be used through the library’s Nelli portal and partly through the Volter database, more information under the heading Electronic resources.
