MAIN LIBRARY  - International Collection, Genera

 

International Collection at the Main Library (signum: PÄÄ Genera) consists of books, periodicals, newspapers, microfilmed newspapers, ephemera and statistics. There are also  ten special collections.

Books

There are approximately 200.000 books in the International Collection, Genera. Acquisitions have been made as purchases and exchanges between universities in the fields of research and teaching in the university. The collection has expanded also through donations especially at the time of the foundation of the library at the 1920s. The oldest book of the collection is Biblia Latina, Bible in Latin, from the year 1481.

Books are situated in closed stacks and customers can make call slip requests for them. Only the most recent international books are available on open shelves at the second floor of the Main Library.

The availability of the books can be searched via Volter database. Information on books not yet added on the database (c. 40 %) can be found in card files on the second floor of the Main Library.

The focus of the library’s acquisitions is nowadays on the interdisciplinary and general sciences and also on humanities and social science.

International statistics (PÄÄ Genera til) are situated at the statistics room in the reading room, the oldest statistics are in closed stacks.

Loan period for books is 28 days. Material published before 1850 can only be borrowed for reading room use.

Periodicals

There are periodicals in the collection dating back to the 18th century. Periodicals cover mostly the subject fields of humanities and social sciences. This year the library subscribes to approximately 160 printed titles and receives also periodicals on exchange or as donations. In Volter database there are approximately 2500 international periodical titles and some titles can also be found in the card files. Electronic periodicals can be used via Nelli portal.

The periodicals of the current year can be read at the Periodicals reading room on the second floor.

Periodicals dating back to more than one year can be borrowed for 14 days. Periodicals printed before 1850 or worn out can only be borrowed for reading room use.

Newspapers

The Main Library subscribes to international newspapers. The most recent issues can be read at the Periodicals reading room for about a month. After that they are moved to closed stacks where also the previous annual volume is kept. An exception is Corriere della sera which is kept from the year 1991. For newspapers situated in closed stacks customers can make call slip requests and they  will be delivered next working day (at the latest by 1.00pm) to the Newspaper reading room in Juslenia.

Microfilmed newspapers

In Genera collection there are 19 microfilmed newspapers, mainly in English and from the 18th century.

Ephemera

Ephemera are varying in contents and most of them have not been catalogued.  Please ask staff at the Main Library enquiries desk for more information, tel. (02) 333 6177, or by email kirjasto@utu.fi.

Ephemera Collection consists of

- publications of scientific institutions, for example museum catalogs and guides, and exhibition catalogs from various countries
- material related to history, for example propaganda material related to world wars
- material related to universities of Sweden from the 18th century onwards: inaugural lectures, invitations to university festivities, annual reports, speeches
- the mathematicians Emmy and Fritz Noether’s offprint collection
- music notes
- travel brochures: brochures cover Asia, Africa, America (North, Central and South), Australia and Europe from 19th century to 1980s. There is a catalog at the enquiries desk.
