MAIN LIBRARY – Fennica Collection

Finnish Collection, Fennica, originates from the Legal Deposit Act. It basically covers all printed matter published in or for Finland, publications in Finnish or concerning Finland and printed matter authored by Finns since 1919. Today coverage is quite good also preceding the time of the Legal Deposit Act since the collection has been completed with donations and acquisitions.

The most significant resources in the Fennica Collection are books, periodicals and ephemera. There are also special collections included, for example a manuscript collection.

Books

Books published in Finland are preserved in the collection permanently. Resources are received on the grounds of the Legal Deposit Act since 1919. The collection is continuously complemented with donations, acquisitions and exchanges.

Course books

Course books from the Fennica Collection can not be borrowed even for reading room use. Borrowing would wear out the preservable resources.

Periodicals

All periodicals published in Finland are preserved in the collection permanently. Resources are received on the basis of the Legal Deposit Act since 1919. Nowadays there are also a significant number of Finnish periodicals in electronic form. These can be used via Nelli portal.

Newspapers

Nearly all Finnish newspapers published in Finland are included in the Fennica Collection either as originals or as microfilms.

If there is a microfilm available it is not possible to borrow the original newspaper to ensure their preservation. Photocopying of printed Finnish newspapers is forbidden. Microfilmed newspapers can be read with microfilm readers at the second floor of the Main Library. Microfilm readers can be reserved beforehand if necessary. Photocopying of microfilmed newspapers is possible.

The availability of the newspapers can be searched via Volter database. Information on newspapers not added into the database but available in the library can be found in the card files on the second floor of the Main Library. You can request newspapers by placing a call slip via the Volter database and read them in the newspaper reading room in Juslenia.

Since the beginning of 2008 Turku University Library has not received Finnish newspapers on the basis of the Legal Deposit Act. Some of the newspapers published in 2007 are located in the distant stocks which are visited on Mondays and Thursdays (twice a week).

Theses

There are a considerable number of theses in the Fennica Collection, but sometimes the only copies can be found at the departments.

Ephemera

Fennica Collection includes an extensive uncatalogued collection of ephemera (e.g. annual reports, instructions, manuals, posters etc.).

Special collections

There are also special collections in the Fennica Collection (mainly in Finnish). All collections apart from the manuscript collection can be borrowed for reading room use. For more information, please contact the Main Library enquiries. There is more information on the special collections on the library's Finnish web pages.
