LIBRARY OF EDUCATIONAL AND SOCIAL SCIENCES
Resources
The resources of the faculty library, as well as European Documentation Centre and Course Book Library operating in the same premises are, apart from the oldest material, available on open shelves as home loans or reading room loans. There is also access to databases, electronic books and electronic journals. There are approximately 100 000 books on the faculty library collections and about 500 active printed periodicals.
Books
The books available for home loan are situated on the ground floor of the library as nine separate collections: contemporary history, economics, education, logopaedics, philosophy, political science, psychology, sociology/social policy/social work and statistics. Reference books form their own collection and the same applies to course books which have been combined from different collections to the Course Book Library's collection. Location of the collections can be checked from the library's floor map.
The loan period for books is 28 days, for course books 14 days. Reading room copies of course books are given for overnight or weekend.
The availability and call number of books can be checked via Volter database.
The essential contents of the books are indexed to the database according to the descriptors of the Finnish General Thesaurus (YSA) since 1993. Also part of the older literature has been equipped with YSA-terms. One can take advantage of these descriptors when searching information according to subject (Vesa Web Thesaurus). Records are more extensively described with Finnish subject terms, but there are also a lot of Swedish subject terms. These can be searched via the Swedish thesaurus Allärs. There are some English subject terms, too, especially in parts of the newest material. These descriptors are usually Library of Congress subject headings. When searching older material it can also be helpful to use classification search. For further details see How to find resources.
Electronic books can be used via Nelli portal.
Periodicals
Periodicals are journals, yearbooks and serial publications. Call number for periodicals in Volter database is K Kasvat. Aik. or YHT Aik.
There are printed periodicals and electronic journals belonging to the fields of educational and social sciences in the library collections. Electronic journals can be used via Nelli portal. Electronic resources can be printed from work stations to the photocopiers of the 1st and 2nd floor.
Printed periodicals are on the first floor of the library since 1980. Latest volumes are situated on the low shelves according to collection: contemporary history, economics, education, philosophy, political science, psychology, sociology/social policy/social work and statistics. Older volumes have been combined from different collections to alphabetical order according to the name of the periodical. Periodicals published before 1980 are situated to the closed stacks from which the staff will collect them when necessary.
Periodicals and yearbooks can not be borrowed apart from a few yearbooks. Copying is possible with library's photocopiers.
Finnish and international report serials are situated on the shelves with book collections on the ground floor of the library. Loan period is 28 days.
Theses
The most comprehensive collection of the theses of educational and social sciences (master's and licentiate's theses) is in the Main Library: as a rule all of them since 1978. In addition to the Main Library there are theses of education, logopaedics, psychology, social policy, social work and sociology also in the faculty library. Theses of the Department of Teacher Education in Rauma from 1983-1995 can be used as microfiches.
Master's and licentiate's theses since 1990 are situated on the first floor of the library. Theses completed before 1990 are in closed stacks from which they are collected by the staff. Master's and licentiate's theses can not be borrowed home.
Dissertations are situated to different collections and call numbers according to subject (loan period 28 days).
All the theses situated in the faculty library can be found via Volter database (in call number after the name of the collection Opinnäytteet). If the thesis is not in the faculty library it can be enquired from the Main Library or the department of the subject in question.
