THE LIBRARY REGULATIONS OF TURKU UNIVERSITY LIBRARY

Approved at the Library Board on the 8th of June 2004 (replaces regulations approved on the 14th of December 1999)

The precondition for the use of Turku University Library and its printed and electronic materials is that the user agrees to follow the library regulations and instructions given by the Library staff. Failure to do so may result in the loss of borrowing rights, or loss of the right to use the Library for a certain time or ever.

Library materials

Library materials must be handled with care. Readers are absolutely not allowed to underline, mark or write on any items from collections. The borrower is obliged to replace a damaged or lost item with a new copy of that item (even the same edition) or to compensate the library for the loss according to the tariff in the valid Services price list.

Copies of library materials can be made in accordance with the Copyright Act, copyright contract and the Act of Payment. Readers are not allowed to copy items which can suffer from copying.

The viewing, downloading and printing of electronic materials is permitted according to the valid Copyright Act and the respective database agreement licences. Library users must follow the Terms and conditions of use issued by the University Computer Services  and the Library's regulations concerning the use of the electronic resources. If the user violates any of the Access rights the user can be held financially liable for the damage and/or may lose the right to use the library and the electronic resources.

Electronic materials can be used in the network of the University of Turku and from outside the network with UTU user identification.

The Library's workstations and equipment are for the use of Library resources, research and studies. Library may designate some workstations to the use of staff and students of Turku University only.

Borrowing

A valid library card is required when borrowing Library materials. The card is issued for the exclusive use of the borrower named, and the card holder is responsible for both the card and for all borrowed materials. If the borrower's contact information changes (e.g. name, address), or the card is lost, the library must be notified immediately. The borrower agrees to return the loans on the due date at the latest. A fine may be charged on an overdue loan.

Fees and compensations

Fees and compensations are based on the Finnish law on government payment services, the Ministry of Education decree on fees for library and information services and Turku University decrees. Unpaid fines and fees will be collected by an enforcement order.

Peace and quiet

Library users who disturb others may lose the right to use the library for a prescribed time. The use of cell phones in the Library is prohibited, and the cell phones should be muted. Members of the Library staff and of the university security staff have a right to ask library users who disturb others to leave the library.

Turku University Library may also issue further guidelines on the use of the Library.
